rwa are working with Grimshaw Architects and The Buchan Group on the redevelopment of Highpoint Shopping Centre.
The proposed landsape design provides two key areas that will contribute to visitor access and community amenity.
The Ring Road at Highpoint will consist of formal and informal planted trees through the existing road network. The landscape proposes to build upon and enhance the existing tree planting found on site by revegetating with tree and understorey planting with plant stock selected from local provenance to create an urban forest in the existing buffer between adjacent residences and the development. This proposed woodland introduces a new shared pedestrian and cyclist pathway for connection from Rosamond Road to Warrs Road. This shared pathway shall be a 2-way 3.0m wide path which will wind through existing trees in the sections north east of the site. Signage shall be placed along the route identifying in example plants and fauna information to provide some educational information to those traversing the route.
The Market Square is the “welcome mat” to the new eastern entry from the Ring Road and carpark. The Market Square is visually recognisable to visitors by the use of natural stone paving and timber decking. The materials chosen draw upon the immediate site context – prevalence of bluestone found on site and the same material’s association of café street lifestyle of Melbourne – and wider reference to Maribyrnong’s industrial waterfront and railway bridge resultant of the emergent growth of Melbourne.
